Why I Nearly Quit Chiropractic (And Why I'm Glad I Didn't)

Three years ago, I nearly quit and walked away from Chiropractic.
It wasn't that I didn't enjoy the work. It was something harder to put my finger on, a feeling that I was doing the same thing, on repeat, and something was missing. A constant need to grow. A constant need to add new things to my toolbelt. I just wasn't sure how. At the time, it felt like imposter syndrome, like I simply wasn't good enough for the people coming through my door.
The shift came from a mentor. He looked at me one day and said something that sounds simple but completely changed how I practise: stop looking at the condition. Start looking at the person in front of you. It took me some time to process the statement. Was I not looking at the person in front of me? They came in and had pain in their body. They didn't want the pain to be there anymore. What was I missing from that?
Focus on the person, not the condition...
So I started doing exactly that. And everything changed. I began to notice that two people could walk through my door with identical diagnoses and be in entirely different places. Different goals. Different personal histories. Different relationships with their pain. Different ideas of what "better" even means to them.
Same diagnosis. Completely different people.
Treating the people in front of me the same way now made no sense at all.
I find myself genuinely excited to get to work. Not because I know what's coming, but because I don't. Someone I saw a month ago has lived an entire month since I last saw them. Their job stress, their sleep, their weekend, all of it matters. All of it is part of their picture, your picture.
This is why First Line Chiropractic exists.
First Line Chiropractic isn't built around a protocol. It's built around you, Your Health, Your Pace, Your Plan. No one else's.
I remember sharing this story with a patient once. They said: "I'm glad you got through your rut, because if you hadn't, I don't know where I'd be now." For context, the patient had struggled with chronic pain for years when she came to see me, and we learned very quickly that she most likely had some form of Hypermobility or even Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS). We eventually were able to get an official diagnosis confirmed as Hypermobile EDS months later. Having that diagnosis opened doors for her: support at work, understanding at home, and a clearer path forward.
Her one line reminded me exactly why I am a Chiropractor.
If you've been wondering whether chiropractic is right for you, I'd love to hear from you. Whether you have questions about chiropractic or just want to know more about what I do, feel free to get in touch.
